Growing up, there was always a pound cake on the counter. Going back at least as far as Granny Morgan (Sherri's grandmother) and continuing through Grandmom (Sherri's mom) to both of us, a pound cake is our family's go-to dessert.
We've made all kinds (sour cream, 7-up, cream cheese, buttermilk) for all occasions. Whether we were expecting company or going visiting, celebrating a holiday or a birthday, spending a week together at the ranch or the beach (or even camping), someone always brought a pound cake.
Which might explain why we lost our heads a little bit when we discovered this one - and drove 10 hours (each way!) just to fill Brooke's mini van so we could share it with you.
Made by our friends at Sugaree's Bakery in New Albany, Mississippi, this traditional Southern Cream Cheese Pound Cake is simple, sweet, delicate, and decadent with a melt in your mouth texture and rich, buttery flavor you won't be able to get enough of. And it's as stunning as it is delicious! (You may want to stock up, as they freeze well and are so handy to have around for gifts or when company is coming.)
We're thrilled to be able to share this cake with you just in time for Spring Celebrations (like Mothers day, Graduations, graduations, baby or bridal showers). We know you'll love it as much as we do!
Here are our favorite ways to serve (And eat) this Southern Pound Cake.
The Possibilities are Endless!
One reason we love a good Southern Pound Cake is its versatility. While it certainly can stand on it’s own with a cup of coffee, we think it's even better (and more fun) to get a little creative with it. Here are three of our favorite ways to serve (and eat) it.
1. Raspberries & Lemon Curd
Inspired by Granny Morgan's famous lemon pie.
Gently fold a good-sized dollop of sour cream into fresh lemon curd, then drizzle generously over a slice of Pound Cake and top with juicy raspberries. (You can make your own lemon curd, of course, or save yourself the trouble with our Meyer Lemon Spread.)
2. Strawberries & Cream
Grandmom never served a Pound Cake without fresh strawberries and homemade whipped cream.
Slice fresh strawberries, sprinkle lightly with sugar, stir, and set aside to macerate for as long as you can stand waiting. In the meantime, whip a cup or two of heavy cream with sugar and vanilla to taste until cream reaches a fluffy, pillowy consistency. Generously top slices of Pound Cake with berries and cream and enjoy!
3. Toasted with Cherry Preserves
Benny's go-to midnight snack.
Spread thin slices of Pound Cake with salted butter and pop in the toaster or oven just long enough to heat through and crisp up the edges. Slather with Cherry Preserves before digging in. This is especially good for breakfast the next day (if you have any left over, that is).
